The coastline is divided into two types: island coastline and mainland coastline, but the coastline is not a line. This sentence sounds obviously inconsistent with the logic of the green reefs and clear water in the inter-chao area, where people are busy catching seafood, but it is indeed a saying of oceanographers. The constant changes in oceans and land are complex. Let us assume for the moment that the land is fixed and the oceans only change tidally. The sea water rises and falls repeatedly day and night, and the line connecting the sea level and the land is also constantly changing along the coast at high tide. Assuming that the intersection line between seawater and land can leave a bright color at all times, then the trace of the coastline throughout the day and night is a strip extending along the coast with a certain width. For practical convenience in surveying, mapping and statistics, the coastline on the map is artificially specified. The coastline on a general map is the modern mean high tide line. The coastline on the Mackett navigational chart is the theoretical lowest low-tide line, which is slightly lower than the actual lowest low-tide line. This provision is entirely for the sake of navigation safety. Because the water depth on the chart is based on this theoretical lowest low tide, it can be guaranteed that at any time, the actual water depth will be deeper than the water depth marked on the chart. The ship will never run aground if it sails according to this chart.
As mentioned earlier, the coast is the narrow area of land on the coastline. This is a very real concept in life. That is to say, the coast is the area of land above the sea water when we stood there and looked at the sea. The geomorphological coast is different. It refers to the place where sea and land are interacting now and where they have interacted in the past.
The coastal zone refers to the area where modern sea and land are interacting. That is, the intertidal zone (tidal flat) that is affected by the rising and falling seawater every day and the sea-land transition zone between a certain range of land and shallow sea on both sides. Coastal zone is a very popular modern concept.
