Various artificial coasts

With the development of science, technology, economy and society, people's ability to control, transform and utilize nature has also been continuously strengthened. Artificial coasts, that is, coasts constructed entirely artificially that change the original natural state, are becoming larger and larger in scale.

Rotterdam port coast in the Netherlands

The early large-scale artificial coast construction in my country was related to the salt industry. my country's salt drying industry has a very long history, and the practice of boiling salt on the seaside began in slavery society. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, coastal states such as Qi and Wu vigorously developed the sea salt industry. However, the production method of boiling the sea into salt has little impact on the coast. It was not until about 500 years ago, during the Jiajing period of Emperor Shizong of the Ming Dynasty (1522-1566 AD), that Haiyan began a new stage of seawater sun salting. This reform of the salt production method led to the construction of dams to block tides, the retention of seawater, the construction of tidal ditches, salt ponds, roads and other projects. The natural coastal appearance has undergone tremendous changes since then. Several of my country's largest salt fields are distributed along the Bohai Bay, Laizhou Bay and the coast of northern Jiangsu. A sea-blocking dam was built there, and the saltworks seawall became a majestic artificial coast.

The large-scale marine aquaculture industry has also caused great changes in the appearance of the coast. In order to raise shrimp and fish, sea walls and gates must first be built on the tidal flats. Build shrimp ponds, fish ponds and water supply and drainage projects within the embankment. These long embankments built near the sea are several kilometers or dozens of kilometers long and more than 3 meters wide, and can accommodate tractors and cars. They are the largest artificial coasts in my country in recent years. Its total length is estimated to be nearly 1,000 kilometers. It marks the development of China's marine aquaculture industry and the great progress of social economy.

Reincarnation of salt fields

The harbor terminal is also a typical artificial coast. Seaport projects include breakwaters, harbor basins, berths, docks, cargo yards, warehouses, roads, etc., which form a port coast, and the original natural coast no longer exists. There are hundreds of large and small ports along my country's coast, and the coast length of port projects is hundreds of kilometers long. Reinforced concrete construction is a typical feature of port coasts.

Land reclamation from the sea also has a long history in our country. After the founding of New China, the area of reclaimed tidal flats across the country reached more than 10 million acres. Reclamation of the tidal flat means building a dam on the outer edge of the tidal flat, draining the seawater inside the dam, and introducing water to wash away the salt in the soil. The salinity in the soil gradually decreases, making it a fertile farmland. With the completion of the dam to reclaim the tidal flats, it marks the birth of a new coastline. When reclaiming the sea for industrial land and urban construction land, sea dams must first be built to form artificial coasts. <br>
