The silky butterfly fish has an oval body with very flat sides. The snout is long and conical. The dorsal fin has a filamentous extension ray, and there is an eye-shaped spot below it that is larger than the diameter of the eye. There is a horizontal band on the side of the head that passes through the eye diameter. There are 7-8 diagonal lines on the upper part of the body that intersect at right angles with 9-10 diagonal lines on the ventral side. The trailing edge of the caudal fin is truncate or slightly convex.
