The brown scorpionfish has spines on the back of its head. The space between the eyes is deep and narrow, half the eye diameter. The lower edge of the orbital bone has no spine; the lower edge of the preorbital bone has a blunt spine. There are finely toothed bands on the upper and lower jaws, vomer and hip bones. The dorsal fin has 12 spines; the pectoral fin usually has 18 rays. There are 5 dark irregular horizontal stripes on the side of the body.

Warm-temperate bottom fish. Inhabits coastal reef areas. The larger ones can reach more than 300 mm. Ovoviviparous. It is a common fish found along the coast east of Leizhou Peninsula in my country.

Distributed in the western North Pacific. Our country is produced in the South China Sea, East China Sea, Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea.
