Characteristics of the Weddell Seal (the best seal for diving)

Among mammals, good divers should be those that live in the ocean, also known as sea animals. The ancestors of the sea beasts living in the ocean today are terrestrial mammals. After hundreds of millions of years, they gradually entered the ocean. Since various sea beasts have been in the water for different lengths of time, their dependence on water is different.

Among the seal family, the best for diving is the Weddell seal, which is found along the coast of the Antarctic continent and its surrounding islands. In March 1966, a detector was installed on a male Weddell seal. It was found that its diving depth reaches 600 meters. At this depth, the Weddell seal has to withstand 60 kilograms of water pressure per square centimeter, which shows that it is the best seal for diving; the adult Weddell seal spends the winter in the ice, using its teeth to crush the ice and stay in the ice. Breathe through the hole. Its food is mainly sculpin and squid. As aquatic four-legged animals, seals are far less dependent on water than whales. The body has limbs and is covered with hair. All this shows that the ancestors of seals entered the water for a shorter time than whales. Therefore, their body shape is not like fish but like animals, so their diving depth is not as deep as whales. But besides whales, they are also really good divers. Spotted seals, native to the northern coast of my country, can dive to a depth of about 100 meters, and can dive to 300 meters in deep waters for 23 minutes. Gray seals are born in the Arctic waters and the North Atlantic. The 6-month-old cubs can dive to a depth of 80 meters for the first time in the water.
