When the 5th instar larvae of the broad-tailed swallowtail butterfly is frightened and turns out its stink horns, it also makes its three thoracic segments bulge into a very large triangle. Together with the three black spots on it, it forms a threatening posture like a poisonous snake for self-defense. When the 5th instar larvae of the red-horned white butterfly is frightened, it can lift the front five segments of the insect's body. With the unique stripes on its ventral surface, it resembles the posture of a cobra before attacking. It can intimidate foreign enemies and use it to defend itself.
The background color of the adult forewings is dark brown, and the hind wings are the same, but there are large white stripes near the middle chamber, and rows of red crescent-shaped stripes on the rear edge. The most obvious difference between this butterfly and other swallowtail butterflies is that the tail process of its hind wings is particularly wide, with two veins running through it. This is a feature not seen in other species. The male and female are similar in appearance, but the female is larger.
