Ibis-billed Sandpiper makes rare appearance in Giant Panda National Park

The Ibis-billed Sandpiper is a distinctive snipe with a black-and-white body, red beak and legs, and a long and downwardly curved beak. Often alone or in small groups of 3-5, they move and forage on the gravel beaches and beaches on both sides of the river. It puts its head and neck into the water to look for food. Mainly feeds on worms, centipedes, and insects and insect larvae of the order Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Isoptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera. Also eats small fish, shrimp, and molluscs. It is alert and will squat down at the slightest sound until danger approaches, then quickly walk away along the winding path between gravels or take off to escape.

Recently, staff from the Tangjiahe area of the Giant Panda National Park photographed five rare birds - Ibis-billed Sandpipers on the banks of the Qingzhu River in Qingxi Town.

The ibis-billed snipe is an ecological indicator bird. With the Tangjiahe area's 45-year effective protection of the river and water ecological environment in the area and a series of protection measures such as the river chief system adopted since the establishment of the Giant Panda National Park, it has provided the basis for its migration. The passing wading birds and geese and ducks provide food supplies and a temporary docking environment, which further proves that the water ecological environment around the Giant Panda National Park is getting better and better, and community residents are becoming more aware of conservation.
