Pet Age Calculator

Convert your pet's age into approximate human years and get a quick idea of which life stage your dog, cat, rabbit, hamster, bird or fish is currently in.

Note: Different breeds, body sizes and individual health conditions can vary a lot. This calculator only provides a rough estimate. For any health concerns, please always follow the advice of a qualified veterinarian.

How this pet age calculator works

In many companion animals, growth during the first one to two years is very rapid – a bit like a human baby turning into a teenager in a short time. After that, ageing slows down and each extra calendar year does not equal the same number of “human years”. This tool uses a simplified model based on common rules of thumb and several published studies to give pet guardians an easy way to understand which life stage their animal might be in. It is not meant to be a precise medical tool, but rather a practical reference.

  • Dogs: the first year is roughly equivalent to 15 human years, the second year adds about 9 human years, and every year after that adds around 5 human years. This pattern reflects the very fast development in puppyhood and a slower but steady ageing during adulthood, and is generally more realistic than the old “1 dog year = 7 human years” rule.
  • Cats: the first year is also around 15 human years, the second year adds about 9, and each additional year is counted as roughly 4 human years. Cats mature quickly in the first two years and then enter a relatively stable adult period, so the yearly increase is slightly lower than in dogs.
  • Rabbits: for pet rabbits, the first year is approximated as 12 human years, the second year adds about 8, and each following year is counted as about 6 human years. Rabbits show rapid early development but can also show clear signs of ageing later in life, so senior rabbits usually need more careful diet and environment management.
  • Hamsters: hamsters typically live only 2–3 years. In this calculator we roughly treat one hamster year as about 35 human years. That means a one-year-old hamster is already in middle age or even senior stage in human terms, so daily care and stress reduction are especially important.
  • Small cage birds: for common small pet birds (such as budgies and finches), the first year is approximated as 18 human years, and each year after that adds about 7 human years. Large parrots and other long-lived birds may age more slowly, so this model is only a broad reference for small species.
  • Pet fish: for typical small aquarium fish, the first year is approximated as 10 human years, with each additional year adding about 6 human years. In reality, water quality, species and stocking density have a much bigger influence on life span, so the calculated “human age” should be treated as a very rough guide only.

Please keep in mind that breed, body size, genetics, diet, environment and medical care all have a strong impact on how quickly an individual animal ages. Even within the same species, two pets of the same chronological age can be in very different health conditions. This calculator is designed for education and quick reference only and cannot replace a professional veterinary examination. Part of the logic for dog age conversion is inspired by recent research on canine ageing (for example: Dog-to-Human Aging) and then heavily simplified so that everyday pet owners can easily understand it. Final medical decisions should always be based on the opinion of a veterinarian.
