Does a snake have legs?

2023-06-13 08:21:55 180

Modern snakes no longer have legs capable of true movement. Although some ancient snakes evolved to have limbs, such as monitor lizards (such as anacondas) and sea snakes from early prehistoric times, they had hind limbs, forelimbs, or both. However, modern snakes have gradually lost their limbs during the long process of evolution, which has become one of the distinctive features of snakes.

Modern snakes still retain some genetic genes related to limbs. These genes are activated during embryonic development, resulting in the formation of some vestigial skeletal structures, such as the tailbone and residual pelvic bones. These vestigial skeletal structures serve no actual function but illustrate the transition from limbed to limbless animals during snake evolution.
