Nujiang golden monkey is also known as Myanmar Snub-nosed Monkey and Burmese Snub-nosed Monkey in foreign languages. It has no subspecies and is the fifth golden monkey species discovered in the world in modern times.
In early 2010, Fauna & Flora International collected a complete golden monkey corpse specimen while conducting a primate survey in northeastern Kachin State, Myanmar. After comparison, the researchers excitedly concluded that the new species was different from any known primates and was a new species of golden snub-nosed monkey. The results were published in the American Journal of Primatology on October 26, 2010. This new species is geographically isolated from other golden snub-nosed monkeys and is separated by two major barriers, the Mekong River and the Thanlwin River. Since the type specimen of this species was found in Myanmar, it is also commonly known as the "Myanmar golden snub-nosed monkey". On October 16, 2011, in the Lushui area of Nujiang Prefecture, Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve, Chinese grassroots forestry workers took the world's first live photo of a new species of golden snub-nosed monkey for the first time, confirming its actual distribution in China. The Chinese Primate Expert Group named it "Nujiang Golden Snub-nosed Monkey" in Chinese. On April 9, 2012, the DNA test results of the Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey feces conducted by the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Yunnan University showed that the Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey is related to the Yunnan golden snub-nosed monkey, and their DNA similarity is 96.7%. The gene sequence of Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey is different from the four golden snub-nosed monkey species discovered in the world, namely Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey, Yunnan golden snub-nosed monkey, Guizhou golden snub-nosed monkey and Vietnamese golden snub-nosed monkey. For the first time, the biological community has confirmed at the molecular level that a new golden snub-nosed monkey species has been discovered in China. In October 2012, a scientific article on the discovery of a new species of black snub-nosed monkey in Nujiang Prefecture, China was officially published in the American Journal of Primatology, and its Chinese name was officially set as "Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey".
Nujiang Prefecture is the only region in China with two species of golden snub-nosed monkeys, namely: Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey and Yunnan golden snub-nosed monkey. From then on, Yunnan not only has Yunnan golden snub-nosed monkey, but also has another golden snub-nosed monkey - "Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey". The face of the Nujiang golden monkey is very similar to that of the Yunnan golden monkey, but the face is not as beautiful as that of the Yunnan golden monkey, which has red lips; the Nujiang golden monkey does not look as big as the Yunnan golden monkey; the biggest difference is that the Nujiang golden monkey is mostly black. The common feature of golden monkeys is that their noses are facing upwards, and they have a common name called snub-nosed monkeys. When it rains, they will droop their heads for fear that rain will flow into their nasal cavities. In the rainy season, snub-nosed monkeys will quietly lower their heads.
The social organization and behavioral ecological characteristics of the Nujiang golden monkey are very similar to those of other golden monkeys of the same genus, mainly "polygamy". According to reports, infrared camera photos identified a total of 5 complete polygamous units and 1 complete all-male unit, proving that the Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey, like the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey, also has a multi-layered social structure, that is, a polygamous basic social unit, multiple basic social units and 1-2 all-male units gather together to form a larger group of more than 100.
Human activities such as logging, road construction, and poaching are seriously threatening the survival of the Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey. In fact, the entire Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey family has been hovering on the brink of extinction.
