The entire island group is arranged in a northeast-east direction. There are more large islands in the south, with higher altitudes and dense arrangement. In the north, there are mostly small islands with lower terrain and scattered distribution. The main islands include Zhoushan Island, Daishan Island, Zhujiajian Island, Liuheng Island, Jintang Island, etc. Among them, Zhoushan Island is the largest, covering an area of 502 square kilometers, making it the fourth largest island in my country.

The Zhoushan Islands are the remnants of the Tiantai Mountains in eastern Zhejiang extending to the sea. Between 10,000 and 8,000 years ago, today's island group was formed due to rising sea levels that submerged the mountains. The highest peak of the archipelago is Duohua Mountain on Taohua Island, with an altitude of 544.4 meters. The entire archipelago belongs to the low mountain and hilly landform type. Due to the rise and fall of sea levels and long-term wave erosion, the islands have developed sea erosion terraces and caves. The 10-meter-high sea erosion terraces can be seen everywhere on Zhoushan Island, and the 30-meter-high terraces are even clearer. The Chaoyin Cave on Putuoshan Island are all sea caves. The current, like a big porter, transports a large amount of sediment to the hidden areas of the archipelago for deposition, connecting several islands to form an accumulation plain on the island. Zhoushan Island, Zhujiajian Island, and Daishan Island are all large islands formed by the expansion of sea plains.

In terms of geological structure, the Zhoushan Islands are part of the Chinese mainland. The stratigraphy is the same as that of the eastern Zhejiang continent. It is mostly composed of Mesozoic volcanic rocks, as well as ancient metamorphic rocks such as gneiss and marble, and Cenozoic basalt. Since the Quaternary, along with the multiple rises and falls of sea level, marine gravel layers and silt beach accumulations have been deposited.
