On April 16, the Beijing Municipal Landscaping and Greening Bureau released a new version of the "Beijing Terrestrial Wildlife List" at the launch ceremony of the 41st "Bird Love Week". The number of wild animals in the city has increased to 608, and the 12 new species are all birds.

The last version of the "List of Terrestrial Wildlife in Beijing" was released in 2021. The number of wild animal species included in the new version of the list in 2023 has increased from 596 to 608 species, and the number of bird species has reached 515.

The newly added birds were discovered by wildlife enthusiasts during field observations and were identified as new recorded species in Beijing after expert appraisal organized by the Municipal Landscaping and Greening Bureau. According to statistics, there are nearly 100 more bird species in the city than ten years ago.

"Birds are very sensitive to changes in the ecological environment." Deng Wenhong, a professor of zoology at Beijing Normal University, said that the increase in birds is due to the city's continued ecosystem restoration, improving the quality of mountainous forests, building large-scale ecological sections, and restoring wetland ecosystems . At present, the wetland area in Beijing has reached 62,100 hectares, providing a habitat for nearly 50% of Beijing’s plant species and 76% of its wild animal species. The establishment of 79 nature reserves at all levels and types, including forest parks, wetland parks, geological parks, and scenic spots, has effectively protected more than 90% of the city's national and local key wild animals, plants, and habitats.

In conjunction with the Bird Love Week promotion activities, the city also released the "Beijing Bird Watching Map" and launched 45 bird watching spots with rich bird resources, including Beihai Park, Cuihu Wetland Park, Fangshan Shidu, and Yanqing Wild Duck Lake, to provide bird watching services. and bird photography enthusiasts provide guidance.

12 newly added bird species: Gray-crowned Flycatcher, Purple-backed Starling, Black-breasted Thrush, Kamchatka Willow Warbler, Short-tailed Shearwater, Black-faced Noisy Babbler, Blue-fronted Redstart, Painted Ibis, Short-billed Golden Wire Swallow, Chestnut-backed Bulbul, Gray Tree Magpie, Chestnut Kite. Among them, the colorful ibis is a national first-level protected wild animal, and the chestnut kite is a national second-level protected wild animal.
