The alligator is a reptile, belonging to the order Crocodile and the family Crocodileidae, and is not an amphibian. Unlike amphibians, crocodiles have skin covered in horny scales and strong limbs that allow them to run quickly on land. The alligator is a rare animal unique to China. It was once on the verge of extinction and is now listed as a national first-level protected animal. They live in rivers, lakes and ponds in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and Xiangjiang River Basin in China. They mainly feed on fish and small mammals and are one of the important carnivores.
