Yili is distributed in rivers in southern Guangdong, the Jiulong River and Zhanghe River systems in Fujian, and some rivers in Hainan Island; it is also distributed in some parts of Vietnam abroad.

The distribution area of this species is narrow and the population is small. Due to the construction of dams on some rivers in the distribution area, the hydrological conditions of the original mountain streams have been changed, the ecological environment has been changed, and the lives of the Yili group have been affected. In addition, the phenomena of poisoning, explosion, and electricity in the mountain streams have been very serious, reducing the originally small number. The number of large groups is still decreasing.
