The body is long and slightly cylindrical. Head tapered. The kiss stands out. The mouth is in inferior position, horseshoe-shaped, the front edge of the mandible is not horny, and the inner side is slightly horny. The lower lip is well developed and divided into 2 lobes without a middle lobe. The two lobes are connected at the front and the trailing edge is involuted. One pair of barbels, located at the corners of the mouth, thick and long. The body is covered with fine scales, and the scales on the side of the body near the abdomen are degenerated and buried under the skin or exposed on the chest and abdomen; there are 98-117 lateral line scales, which are about twice the size of the body scales. Anal fin well developed. The dorsal fin has no spines and starts in front of the pelvic fins. The back of the body is grey-brown, with uniform and irregular small spots distributed, the abdomen is gray-white, and there are many spots on the head, back, chest and tail fin.
A kind of fish adapted to live in the flowing water of the main branches and tributaries of large rivers, and sometimes also inhabits affiliated water bodies. It has the habit of going upstream in spring and downstream in autumn. The growth rate is very slow and the age of sexual maturity is late.
Distributed in the Jinsha River system, Nujiang River and Lancang River in Sichuan and Yunnan.
