Habitat: This species inhabits small and medium-sized streams in low-altitude mountainous areas and evergreen forests. It can also be found in small ponds and artificial pools. The water temperature in winter and early spring is basically stable at around 11 degrees Celsius.
Habits: This species is mainly nocturnal and feeds on dragonfly larvae and small gastropods. Its adults can be observed in the water all year round. There is no record of hibernation or aestivation.
Breeding season: From the end of November; During the breeding season, the male cloaca is swollen and the tail shows irregular bright purple stripes. Similar stripes may also appear on some females.
