Longdong Stream Salamander is a tailed amphibian of the family Hynomidae and the genus Hynomidae. It lives in spring caves at an altitude of about 1,200 meters and in the downstream river. The upper part of the river is deep, the lower part is open, the flow is fast, and there are many stones on the bottom of the water. Longdong Stream Salamander often curls up under the stone, gently turning over the stone, and mostly crawling motionless. When catching it, if the water vibrates slightly, it will quickly swim under another stone. Adult salamanders mainly live in water, preying on shrimps, aquatic insects and their larvae in the water.
Longdong Stream Salamander lays eggs around April. The female salamander collected at the end of May was dissected. The eggs were creamy yellow and about 4 mm in diameter.
The distribution of Longdong Mountain Stream Salamander is very narrow and its reproductive capacity is very low. Because the local people took stones to build dams and weirs in the stream, some of its ecological environment was severely damaged, resulting in smaller habitats and breeding places. In addition, the local people in Sichuan caught them by hooks and fishing, which significantly reduced the number of Longdong Mountain Stream Salamander. Therefore, it is recommended that the local relevant departments take measures to protect it.
It is listed in the second level of the "List of National Key Protected Wildlife in China".
