The beautiful newt is a tailed amphibian of the Salamandridae family and the genus Salamandridae. It lives in the rainforests in the valleys between mountains at an altitude of 1450-1550m. The vegetation in the ecological environment is dense, and the adult newts hide in the still water pits (ponds) in the forest or in the small ditches under the bushes during the day. The habitat environment is humid, with an annual maximum temperature of 36℃ and a minimum temperature of 1℃. The newt is active at night and when it rains, and preys on small insects, mollusks, etc. From May to June, the adult newts gather in the slow flow of forest swamps and still water pits (ponds) to mate or lay eggs.
The beautiful newt has long been purchased for the Chinese medicine and pet markets, and its habitat has been affected by farming and hydropower projects, so its population has declined rapidly.
It is listed in the second level of the "List of National Key Protected Wildlife in China".
