Details
Hainan Yaoteng is an amphibian of the family Salamandridae and the genus Yaoteng. It lives in mountainous areas of tropical rain forests at an altitude of 770-950m. It reproduces around May and lays eggs under wet leaves on the banks of ponds in mountain depressions. The eggs are piled up, with 58-90 eggs in each pile. After hatching, the larvae are washed or bounced into the pond by rainwater.
It is listed in the second level of the "List of National Key Protected Wildlife in China".
On April 23, 2022, it was included in the list of priority protected species in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park.
Location
Endemic to China, distributed in Hainan (Qiongzhong, Lingshui, Baisha, Ledong).
Lives in mountainous areas of tropical rain forests at an altitude of 770-950m.
Form
The head is broad and flat, the snout is flat, the skin is rough and covered with dense warts; the ridges on the side of the head are obvious, and the back part is curved inward; there are no rib grooves on both sides of the body, and there are round warts on each side 14-16 They are clearly separated from each other and arranged in longitudinal rows; the neck folds are obvious, and there are thin horizontal constrictions on the chest and abdomen. The body and tail are light brown or dark brown; only the fingers, toes, anal periphery and the lower edge of the tail are orange-red; the ventral surface of the body is grayish brown.
