Yaotriton liuyangensis Life habits and morphological characteristics

The head is flat, the snout is flat, and the nostrils are close to the snout. The skin is rough, and the whole body is covered with grains of relatively uniform size. There are no costal grooves on both sides of the body, and the grains are unclearly separated from each other, almost forming a longitudinal band. The neck folds are clear, and there are transverse constrictions on the ventral surface of the body. The back of the body and tail is dark brown, and the ventral surface is light dark brown. Only the fingers, palmar processes, plantar processes, the inner wall of the anal hole and the lower edge of the tail are orange-red or orange-yellow, and the periphery of the anal hole is black.

Endemic to China, distributed in Hunan (Liuyang).
Lives in mountainous areas with dense shrubs and weeds at an altitude of 1,386m, and adults are mainly terrestrial.

Liuyang Yaozhi is an amphibian of the family Salamandridae and genus Yaozhi. It lives in mountainous areas with lush bushes and weeds at an altitude of 1,386m, and adults are mainly terrestrial. It breeds in still water ponds from May to June, laying about 47 eggs, which are spread flat in the grass.


It is listed in the second level of the "List of National Key Protected Wildlife in China".
