Bullmastiff Detailed Introduction

The Bullmastiff originated in the United Kingdom and was bred by crossbreeding the Bulldog and the Mastiff.

At the end of the 19th century, in order to protect the manor and hunting grounds from poachers, British aristocrats came up with the idea of using natural protectors - dogs, to guard and capture poachers and people who illegally entered the gardens to cut down and destroy the forests. They didn't care whether the dog looked good or not, as long as it worked. After trying several dog breeds, they thought that although the mastiff was brave and powerful, it ran too slowly and was not very aggressive. Although the bulldog was active and strong, it was too fierce and slightly smaller than needed. Therefore, they thought of hybridizing the two to form the bullmastiff.

In the 1900s, many different systems of bullmastiffs appeared. It was not until 1924 that it was formulated that three generations of bullmastiffs must be bred together before they could be registered. At the same time, a breeding model of 60% mastiff and 40% bulldog was given to breeders for reference. But the bulldog in the early 20th century had changed a lot from the early days, and the result was the bullmastiff. Now the breeding group of the bullmastiff is composed of 60% Mastiff and 40% bulldog.

It can catch up and subdue poachers, so it is used as an assistant to gamekeepers. In theory, the Bullmastiff should be one of the most popular guard dogs in the world. Its strength, speed and perseverance enable it to catch up and catch intruders without biting or killing them. The Bullmastiff is beautiful, strong and powerful, and is distributed on all continents of the world, but its distribution is not as good as its German compatriot Rottweiler. The reason is that the Bullmastiff is stubborn, does not obey orders, and overprotects its owner.

The social celebrity Mr. Wei Jishun has a very famous Bullmastiff named Pip. Mr. Wei spent more than 20,000 yuan to import it from the UK to Hong Kong. Since dogs could not be transported by plane at that time, they had to be transported by sea by ship. However, when they were transported back to Hong Kong, an accident occurred in the Suez Canal, blocking the waterway. As a result, it took three months to transport them to Hong Kong. In the early days, many people were not familiar with what kind of dog this was, and mistakenly thought that its name was the name of the breed. Guozhong participated in five dog shows and won four overall championships. It was born from the famous British kennel Buttonoak. Its father was the overall reserve champion of the Cruft Dog Show in 1958. The judges at that time included the world-renowned American Mr. Maxwell Riddle, who had been to Hong Kong twice to serve as a judge. In an interview in 1962, he said, "I have judged more than five large-scale Bullmastiff solo shows around the world. When I first came to Hong Kong to judge Guozhong, it should have been a puppy, and I had predicted that it would be a star of tomorrow. Today I can be sure that it is right. It will win wherever it goes in the world. It has a perfect physique, full of power, eye-catching, and always attracts attention." Mr. Wei Jishun is not only the owner of the fruit breed, but also the first person in the world to introduce the traditional Chinese Shar Pei to participate in dog shows.

Bullmastiffs are highly alert, have strong endurance, are strong and active, and show great strength; their expressions are sharp, their sense of smell is sensitive, they are calm and brave, and they are loyal to their owners. They have the habit of quietly approaching their targets and suddenly attacking. They are more suitable for use as guards, patrols, police and companion dogs. Because of their huge size, Bullmastiffs require spacious space and sufficient training, and their coats need to be brushed and wrinkles cleaned frequently, so they are not suitable for breeding in cities.
