The Chinook originated in the 20th century and is native to the United States.

It was bred by historical breeder Arthur Walton, with the main task of catching sleds. It was bred by mating Eskimo dogs, short-haired Saint Bernard dogs and Belgian shepherd dogs.

The rarest dog in the world is the Chinook, with less than 300 at its peak and only 76 in 1985, all of which lived in the United States. There are less than 200 surviving now.
