The brown bat species is rare. It is a tropical bat that lives in bamboo holes that are eaten by beetles. Since Zhang Libiao et al reported the discovery of this kind of new records in Hainan and other three provinces in 2008, Zhang Qiuping et al. (2014) and Wu Yi et al. (2015) reported the new records of this kind in Jiangxi and Guangdong respectively, which expanded the distribution area of this kind in China from the original 2 provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi to the current 8 provinces and regions. With the further development of investigation, the distribution area of this species may be further expanded. Tu et al. (2017) used molecular methods to classify the genus <Tylonycteris from the perspective of phylogeography, and revised the former Chinese species <T. robustula> to <T. torkinensis.
It has been included in the Chinese Red List of Biodiversity - Vertebrate volume, and the assessment level is near threatened NT.
