Why is the rabbit's nose shaking all the time?

The trembling of the rabbit's nose is a normal physiological phenomenon and is called Thumper. Here are a few possible reasons why your rabbit's nose may be shaking:

1. Smell perception: Rabbits have a very keen sense of smell. They increase air flow by shaking their noses, bringing more odor particles into the nasal cavity so they can better smell the surrounding odors. This nose twitching helps rabbits sense the scent of potential food, danger, or other animals.

2. Temperature regulation: Rabbits do not have sweat glands and cannot regulate their body temperature through sweating. Instead, they dissipate heat primarily through their ears and nose. When a rabbit feels hot, it will vibrate rapidly through its nose to increase air flow and help dissipate heat, thus lowering its body temperature.

3. Social signaling: Nose twitching between rabbits can also serve as a social signal to convey information. For example, when two rabbits greet each other or show friendship, they may twitch their noses slightly.

It's important to note that nose twitching in rabbits is normally mild and rapid and usually does not cause any problems. However, if you observe abnormally violent shaking of the rabbit's nose, wheezing, or other abnormal symptoms, it may indicate that there is a physical problem with the rabbit, and it is recommended to consult a veterinarian for examination in time.
