In July this year, in an artificial lake in the Central Park of Ruzhou City, Pingdingshan, Henan, boaters discovered a strange huge figure swimming in the lake. It was about 1 meter long, with a very long mouth, and Sharp teeth are vaguely visible in its mouth, and its temperament is very ferocious.

Experts determined based on its characteristics that the strange fish was an alligator gar, an exotic species. This matter attracted great attention from the local government, and a salvage team was organized to capture and salvage. However, the salvage results were not good. It was finally decided to use water pumps and other facilities to drain the water of Yunchan Lake starting from July 26 to find these high-risk alien organisms. Alligator gar, beware of the invasion of this alien species. According to the staff, the entire Yunchan Lake has 200,000 to 300,000 cubic meters of water. It was decided to start pumping water around July 26. As of yesterday, the water in Yunchan Lake has basically been drained. According to local media reports, the crocodile The gar has also been located and is expected to be caught today.

This morning, relevant local departments organized personnel to salvage the crocodile gar still in Yunchan Lake.

So, what kind of fish is the crocodile gar, and what harm does it do to the ecological environment? According to experts from the aquatic products department of Pingdingshan City, Henan, the alligator gar belongs to the order Gar, family Gar, and the genus Great Gar. The alligator gar is the largest of all gars, reaching a length of 3 meters. Since the crocodile gar has no natural enemies in my country's ecological environment, it will cause serious damage to the ecological environment. The most direct impact is a decrease in the total number of fish in the lake.

According to experts, the crocodile gar is also known as the "aquatic killer". It has a ferocious temperament and mainly preys on fish in the water. It is an exotic species in our country. The alligator gar has a distinctive appearance, with a long cylindrical body and a protruding snout. It has a short snout like a crocodile and two rows of dagger-like sharp teeth in its upper and lower jaws. According to the size of the crocodile gar discovered in Ruzhou City this time, one bite is enough to swallow a 25 cm long fish. One crocodile gar can even eat fish from a lake.

Jia Tao, a senior aquatic engineer at the Henan Academy of Fisheries Sciences, said: "The crocodile gar grows in North America and has been listed as an invasive animal in China. This fish has a characteristic, that is, it grows very fast. If there is enough food, it will grow quickly. It can grow about 70 or 80 centimeters per year. It is normal to grow two to three meters in a few years. It is a devouring fish. As long as the size is less than half of its body length, it can basically be swallowed. In this case, it may damage all kinds of fish and aquatic animals in the pond."

According to Ruzhou government staff, currently, most of the other fish in Yunchan Lake in Ruzhou Central Park have been eaten, and the top priority is to catch this fish. Because this kind of fish may bite people when there is no food, and if there are children playing in shallow water, they may also be bitten by the fish. In addition, why do alligator gar appear in the artificial lake? Experts from the Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences said that the crocodile gar is native to North America and was later introduced to my country as an ornamental fish. Some consumers buy them out of curiosity, but crocodile gar grow very quickly. Generally, they are released into the water when the tank cannot hold them anymore. In addition, some people buy them specifically to release them.

In fact, as my country's commodity trade and personnel exchanges have become increasingly frequent in recent years, the spread of invasive alien species has become more diversified and hidden, seriously affecting the sustainable development of my country's ecological environment, agriculture, animal husbandry, and fisheries. As for the management of invasive alien species, all parties have been promoting the implementation. Starting from August 1 this year, the "Measures for the Management of Invasive Alien Species" jointly issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment have been officially implemented. This is my country's first management measure for the prevention and control of alien species. The measures are clear. No unit or individual may introduce, release or discard alien species without approval. Anyone who introduces, releases or discards alien species without approval will be punished in accordance with Article 81 of the Biosafety Law of the People's Republic of China. Those suspected of committing a crime will be transferred to judicial authorities for criminal liability in accordance with the law. However, the alligator gar is not currently included in the list of invasive alien species. In this regard, experts said that the latest batch of invasive alien species lists will be announced soon, and the alligator gar is expected to be included. Once the alligator gar is listed, it cannot be introduced or traded casually, nor can it be said that it is raised casually or discarded casually.

Currently, more than 660 species of invasive organisms have been discovered in my country. However, these "foreigners" can be seen everywhere on e-commerce platforms and are sold at low prices. This has also become one of the important ways for alien species to invade.

How to identify invasive alien species? How to adjust the list in a timely manner and strictly prevent it from the system, and at the same time, how to weave a tight prevention net when it is implemented? Gu Dangen, associate researcher at the Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences, interpreted this.

Gu Dangen, associate researcher at the Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences, said: "It must have been introduced from abroad, because supervision in this area was not strict in the past, and then it entered our country, because in the ornamental fish market, many people It may be purchased through e-commerce or from other places. Fish like crocodile gar have no economic value at all. It is strictly forbidden to enter our country, and we do not want to breed or trade. Now we have to fish for a fish. The cost of draining a lake and river is too high. Now we still need to start from the source, including introduction to trade. In addition, we must strictly put an end to some artificial releases. Many alien species are now released because of artificial releases. Caused by species such as the Brazilian turtle and the alligator gar. Currently, the alligator gar should be included in the latest list of alien species. It is to be included in a key managed alien species. In the future, its introduction and trade will be required. Under strict control.”

An adult crocodile gar can reach 3 meters in length and weigh 200 pounds. Its scales are so hard that a chainsaw is required to handle them. The adult ovaries are highly toxic, and the eggs produced are also highly toxic. Although the meat is edible, the toxins will still contaminate the fish if not handled properly.

In addition, the alligator gar has no natural predators in China, and if it is not cleaned up, the ecology of the entire lake will be affected. The alligator gar is almost "invincible" in the country's river basins. When it is hungry, it may eat all the fish in its habitat.

If this alligator gar was discarded by pet owners, it can only be said that there are many irresponsible people. If it was done by the life-release group, they would really like to release thousands of volts of electricity into the lake. Finally, I hope to catch this alligator gar soon.
