Types of Lions: Northern and Southern Lions and Their Subspecies Explained

2025-06-10 16:39:21 6

Lions (Panthera leo) are primarily classified into two main groups: the Northern lion (Panthera leo leo) and the Southern lion (Panthera leo melanochaita). This classification consolidates what were previously over 15 subspecies into these two groups. Lions are large African felids known for their beige coats and the male's distinctive mane.

Tipos de leones

Northern Lion (Panthera leo leo)

Northern lions inhabit West and Central Africa and include the only surviving Asiatic lion population. This group includes:

  • Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica): Historically ranged from Iraq to India, now confined to India's Gir Forest. Slightly smaller and with smaller prides than African lions.

  • West African Lion (Panthera leo senegalensis): Found in Central African tropical forests, facing population declines.

  • Panthera leo kamptzi: Located in the upper Sanga River, Cameroon.

  • Northwest Congo Lion (Panthera leo azandica): Sometimes regarded as distinct from the Nubian lion; inhabits Uganda and Northwest Congo.

  • Nubian Lion (Panthera leo nubica): Sometimes grouped with the Masai lion; inhabits northeast Africa. The famous MGM lion logo is from this subspecies.

  • Katanga or Angola Lion (Panthera leo bleyenberghi): Found in Angola, southern Congo, and Zambia.

  • West African lions are critically threatened by habitat loss.

  • Extinct lions include the European lion (historical references), Atlas lion (extinct in the wild, some captive), American lion (Panthera atrox, large and maneless), cave lion (Panthera spelaea), and other prehistoric species.
