Around AD 968, people in the Northern Song Dynasty discovered a rare red and yellow fish in Hangzhou, Jiaxing and Nanping Mountains in Zhejiang. People are amazed by its bright colors. After this kind of fish was caught, many people couldn't bear to kill it for eating, so they put it into ponds and raised it. Later, some literati gave this fish a beautiful name - golden crucian carp, commonly known as goldfish.
After the invasion of Jin soldiers, Emperor Zhao Gou of the Song Dynasty was forced to move the capital to Hangzhou. Soon, Zhao Gou heard that the golden crucian carp in Hangzhou was extremely beautiful, so he ordered someone to build a fish pond and put the captured goldfish in it for his own enjoyment. From then on, Zhao Gou set a precedent for raising goldfish at home. Later, the emperor's uncles in the Southern Song Dynasty built ponds to raise fish. Goldfish raising became a trend, which almost affected the entire city of Hangzhou.
