The Challenges of Surviving in the Arctic

The melting of Arctic ice is the greatest threat to animals of the region. Losing the ice means not only the disappearance of habitats but also the disruption of the delicate balance within the food chain.

• Polar bears: With less sea ice, mothers and cubs must swim longer distances. Many cubs do not survive these exhausting journeys. Finding food, especially seals, becomes increasingly difficult.

2. Arctic Fox (Alopex lagopus)

Also known as the white fox, the Arctic fox relies on small mammals, birds, and carrion left behind by polar bears. With fewer polar bears, less carrion is available, forcing Arctic foxes to search for alternative food sources.

Rising temperatures are also pushing red foxes further north, where they compete directly with Arctic foxes for food and territory. Although not yet officially classified as “endangered,” the Arctic fox is considered a threatened species by several conservation organizations.

3. Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus leucas)

Belugas are in danger primarily because their main food source, Arctic cod, has declined in population. Arctic cod depend on crustaceans that, in turn, feed on ice algae. As sea ice melts, ice algae diminish, affecting the entire food chain.

Belugas also face other threats:

• Increasing shipping traffic, which disrupts their echolocation and communication.

Since 2008, belugas have been listed as endangered. Today, only about 300–400 individuals remain in the wild.

4. Pacific Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus)

The Pacific walrus is a large Arctic mammal recognizable by its ivory tusks. It depends on ice floes for resting, nursing calves, and breeding.

Unlike seals, walruses do not swim continuously; instead, they move between ice floes as they feed. With shrinking ice, their survival is increasingly at risk.

Additional threats include:

• Hunting for ivory tusks and fat.

• Oil and gas exploration.

• Marine pollution that damages their fragile habitat.

In 2008, conservation groups requested that the Pacific walrus be added to the endangered species list.
